Creating and Editing Posts

Want to broadcast? Get your message out? Then post a message!  You can create a message post once you register yourself with Close by Me and sign-in to your account. It’s easy and free. Close by Me allows you to create a post under a specific category/sub-category, at a location specified by postal/zip code. Once you are done, other users can then easily locate the post when they perform search based on the category, starting point and distance of search.

To create a post:

  • Do one of the following:
    • Click Posts from the main menu, or
    • Choose a sub-category from the classifieds tab. The posts of the selected category or sub category are displayed.
  • From the Close by Me Actions tab on the right panel, select Post a Message-add a post option.
  • The Post Message page is displayed.

In creating a post, what’s required are the post’s location, categorization, subject and message post itself. Everything else is optional, but helps others find your post and interact with it. The location is nothing more than the postal/zip code that is matched with the internal list of codes in the system. The categories and sub-categories help to classify your post or discussion, and help other users find what you are posting. If you have a specific age, price/amount, or event date-time, then you can add it to you post. All amounts and even date-times are assumed to be in the local currency and time of the post’s location.  Next, you will be able to add message attributes. These help further identify your post, and help other users find it when they filter for it in their search.

After adding all the associated information for a post, you can then type in the required the subject and the actually message post itself. Finally you can decide how you want others users to interact with your message post, with options such as allowing comments, ratings, links, etc.

  • On the Post Message page, do the following activities:
    • Enter the Postal/ZIP code in the text field.
    • Select a category from the Category drop-down list.
    • Select a sub-category from the Sub-category drop-down list. Based on the selected category or sub-category the post attributes are displayed below the Post-expiration option. You can re-categorize a post, if necessary.
    • Select an expiration date for the post from the Post-expiration drop-down list. You can also delete a post manually.
    • Select the desired post attributes displayed, if any.
    • Enter the post title in the Message Post Title text area.
    • Enter description of the post in the Message Post text area. You can enter a maximum of 8,000 characters in the text area.

Note: The message options allow you to decide how other users interact with your post. These options are selected by default.

Because of the nature of the system, you can embed objects such as videos from other sites like YouTube, its simple a matter of copying and pasting the the "embed link" in your message post

To embed an object:

  • Copy the embed link from a site like Youtube or Hulu:
  • The embedded media link usually looks like something like: "<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WhwbxEfy7fg&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WhwbxEfy7fg&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>"
  • Paste the link in the context of the message post
  • Continue to add your post as needed

  • Now post your message

Message status shows if the message is currently being displayed in the community, and is ready to be searched. You may want to delete a message post in the future, at which point, you can make a post “inactive”.
